Publie pour la premiere fois par la Librairie Plon en 1893, le Journal comprend deux parties distinctes, 1822 a 1824 et 1847 a 1863, separees par un intervalle de vingt-trois ans. Dans la presente edition, cet aspect caracteristique a ete respecte. De meme, il a ete reserve pour un supplement tous les fragments appartenant a des epoques differentes de la vie d'Eugene Delacroix, qu'il est bien souvent difficile de pouvoir dater avec precision. Une seule exception a ete admise pour les carnets du Voyage au Maroc, qui constituent une sorte de journal de route.

Ce Journal est un monument unique. Les artistes, chez nous, sont d'ordinaire exclusivement artistes, c'est-a-dire artisans, et quand ils se melent d'ecrire, un Fromentin par exemple fait figure d'un ecrivain double d'un peintre amateur. Il en va tout autrement de Delacroix, grand artiste, grand ecrivain, ou mieux, grand homme dont le genie eclate dans toutes ses manifestations, qu'il peigne ou qu'il ecrive comme chez les grands Italiens de la Renaissance. Il s'est d'ailleurs toujours eleve contre ce qu'il appelait la " limitation des genres ". Toutes sa vie, il a adore ecrire, pour lui d'abord, pour les autres ensuite, comme le montre son abondante correspondance qui, le jour ou elle sera reunie, constituera le pendant et le complement du Journal.
